The Gateway of 50: The Hero's Journey, Apollo, and Knowing When to Walk Away

Today, I step across one of the most significant thresholds of my life. I am 50.

A new decade is a massive milestone, but for me this birthday isn't just about marking time. It is a sovereign reclamation. I am on a "judgment day" hero's journey, shedding the last remnants of what no longer serves me, and stepping into an era where I refuse to fight for spaces that cannot meet my worth.

To my beautiful mirror twin brothers: I felt you this morning.

The divination that took my breath away

I woke up and drew hexagrams 36 and 63, and the Wisdom rune. Those mirror numbers, 36 and 63, are an undeniable, loving nod from my brothers. They are here, walking beside me at the edge of this milestone, reminding me that the bridge between where I have been and where I am going is already built.

The reading told the exact story of the threshold I am crossing.

Hexagram 36, Darkening of the Light. This is the art of protecting your inner brilliance when the outer world turns dim, disappointing or unaccommodating. You do not need to force your light into spaces that don't appreciate it, or that only offer basic, underwhelming returns. You simply veil your light and keep moving.

Changing line 5. Keep your inner truth, keep your own counsel, and recognise when it is time to step away quietly, without starting a battle.

Hexagram 63, After Completion. The cycle is done. The transition is complete. The energetic ties have been cut, and everything is back in its right place.

The Wisdom rune, Thurisaz. The gateway. It asks us to clear out the old before we step through, and to pause and observe before we act. Withdrawing our energy quietly, gracefully and completely is the wisdom of the gateway.

When someone shows you who they are

Lately, I've had to face some disappointing, anticlimactic energy: missed readings, workshops that turned out to be over-hyped basics I've already outgrown, and silence from people I expected more from. It triggered that old, familiar sting, the one that reminds me why I sometimes choose to keep my distance.

But this time is different. I realised today that some of the people I've been holding onto are echoes of past hurts and "Judas" friends.

I am not fighting for shit anymore. I am not trying to make people hear me, value me or show up. When someone shows me who they are, I will no longer waste my energy. I am simply removing myself. If my presence there was a spiritual debt to clear old misunderstandings, then today, on my 50th birthday, that debt is paid in full. The contract is cancelled. The era is over.

Apollo

As I was writing this, the word APOLLO came up on a YouTube show playing in the background. Apollo: the god of truth, healing, prophecy and the sun. On a day when my divination spoke of the Darkening of the Light, this was the ultimate cosmic wink, along with the 3  times the word came up yesterday and once the day before that. My light hasn't dimmed. I have simply taken back ownership of who gets to see it.

What I am pouring my light into

I am no longer letting the noise of underwhelming spaces run my day. Instead, I am pouring my love, energy and power into the empire I am building.
